MASTER'S DEGREE

Earning a master's degree in theology deepens your faith and prepares you to fulfil your calling to serve God and others. Equipped with a deeper knowledge of the Bible and God, a master's degree provides graduates with strategic ministry vision and opens a variety of career options, such as chaplaincy. Graduates also work as pastoral counsellors, Bible school teachers, or as leaders of parachurch ministries or community service organizations.

A master's degree in theology prepares graduates for careers in the church or other ministry-related organizations, including teaching in Christian schools. With over two dozen specialization options available, this can be a terrific option for those wanting a deeper knowledge of the Bible alongside ministry training for their current career and life situations. Additionally, if you plan to work full time in the church or as a chaplain, this degree may be required to apply.

A theology master's degree sharpens your Bible study, theology, ministry, and critical-thinking skills in a supportive community of students and scholars. Many master's programs are available on campus or online. An online degree gives students a wealth of benefits, including the flexibility to complete coursework with minimal disruption to your family and professional life. However, in exchange for this flexibility, students need to exercise more self-discipline to complete the program than if they were on-campus and surrounded by others pursuing the same degree.

Students in online and on-campus programs build networks that sharpen their thinking and open doors to future ministry options. Most programs require students to participate in an internship or practicum, which can often lead to job opportunities upon graduation. Similarly, all schools offer job placement assistance through affiliated churches and related organizations..

The Master of Theology is an advanced academic degree that provides you with an opportunity for in-depth study at an advanced level.

Students completing the Master of Theology degree will be prepared for further studies at the doctoral level and/or for the scholarly enhancement of their ministerial and missional practice. Students will:

  1. acquire advanced, in-depth knowledge and competence in one of the following disciplines: Old Testament, New Testament, Theology (including Spiritual Theology) or Church History;

  2. develop advanced skills in theological research and writing, including engagement with primary resources, scholarly exchange in a peer community, and communication of research results for the church and the academy;

  3. cultivate personal and spiritual qualities necessary for scholarly and vocational ministry.

With the option of a thesis and a non-thesis route, you can tailor your education experience to best fit your academic or ministry goals. To do a ThM in this specific study area you will need to take electives specific to the study area.

Further Depth of Study

The Master of Theology focuses on three pillars of studies: Biblical studies, theological studies, and Christian history. Our programme is designed for you to develop and master the skills of research methodology in a community of faith and learning. You may also choose to focus in the area of spiritual theology to complete the educational requirements for designation as a Certified Spiritual Director.

Tailored

You can tailor your studies and choose between a thesis or non-thesis option. Both options serve a variety of aims to fit your needs and careers goals. The thesis option specifically prepares you for further studies at the doctoral level (ThD/PhD), whereas the non-thesis option is geared towards working in ministry and teaching in the church setting.

Mentorship

Throughout the programme, you will be mentored by your professors. You will take courses such as: Spiritual Classics, Protestant Spiritual Traditions, The Theology of the Human Person, and Prayer and the People of God. Your professors will provide you with training and support for your future.
